Concurrency in Ada
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (July, 1995)
Authors: Alan Burns and Andy Wellings
Average review score:

The definitive work on concurrency in Ada
By far the best on the subject. Offers complete coverage of any aspect of concurrency with Ada, including real-time and distributed programming issues. Burns and Wellings are the acknowledged experts on this topic.

The best aspect of the book is the analysis of features and their interactions, providing a depth not available in other texts covering the entire language.

Assumes you know some Ada, but includes an introduction to the sequential part of the language.

I own quite a few books on Ada; this is the one to get if you want the details of Ada concurrency.

ESSENTIAL & EXCELLENT for every PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMMER
Ada has been one of few languages which provides facilities for concurrent programming, but readings for the feature had been limited. This book is not only the first but also an excellent guide to the capability of the new Ada standard.

It covers,

1.@The Ada Language

2.The Nature and Uses of Concurrent Programming

3.Inter-Process Communication

4.Ada Task Types and Objects

5.The Rendezvous

6.The Select Statement and the Rendezvous

7.Protected Objects and Data-Oriented Communication

8.Avoidance Synchronisation and the Requeue Facility

9.Using Protected Objects as Building Blocks

10.Exceptions, Abort and Asyncronous Transfer of Control

11.Tasking and System Programming

12.Real-Time Programming

13.Object-Oriented Programming and Tasking

14.Distributed Systems

15.Conclusion

Not only Ada programmers, but also all professonal software engineers who design real-time, embedded systems, advanced students of computer science, and even beginners should find it quite useful.

I've read the original print published in 1995, which has been out-of-print.

I am so happy to know it is now to be RE-PRINTed, and every programmers would be.

Great Manual/Disk Set
This manual/disk set is for the practitioner. While it has a great section on the ADA related aspects of the employment process, it is really a comprehensive "how to hire the best person" manual. The accompanying disk (in a word processing format) contains all the model letters, forms, interview questions, etc. in the manual, so you don't have to retype!

A great comprehensive how-to manual on recruiting and hiring
This is a very good how-to manual on how to recruit and hire top performers, all within the latest Federal employment laws. The book covers all aspects of the recruitment and selection process, and is full of reprducible aids and helps. I use this manual every time I recruit a new employee.

The Evolution of Love
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (October, 1997)
Author: Ada Lampert
Average review score:

Fascinating, bold and clear, the book is a must.
Understanding the evolutionary paradox of extinction versus love, is one of the exciting results follows reading in this bold, clear and entertaining book. Completely innocent of any scientific flamboyance, free from trying to impress us by unnecessary treasures of knowledge, the author presents issues that have been occupied human beings from time immemorial. She uses such a direct, simple tone, that one often forgets how brave she is, and how much freedom of thought, authonomy of mind, were needed for creating, formulating and consolidating her ideas. The basic claim, optimistic although she refrains of any aspiration to foster hopes, is simply that the talents of loving and of being loved, are genetically inherited, not in any creature but in mammals, whose most dramatic contribution to life on earth was the amazing new care for the helpless infant : parenthood. Later on more kinds of love evolved. Witty, humoristic all the way, she shows how evolution shaped our mate selection. There she elaborates also on the incest taboo and adds an extremely interesting note on the Oedipus` complex of Freud. Most illustrative are the chapters discussing the loving brain and its evolutionary shaped repertoire of sexual behaviors, bewildering each of us. The chapter on homosexuality is used to clear how all humans are actually twin-folded and how complicated and vulnerable is the process of establishing sexual, gender identity. Reading this book is a must.

This book is a clear winner
I have just read "The Evolution of Love" by Ada Lampert and I am genuinly impressed. She maintains a consistent touch throughout: an attractive lightness of style, a thorough familiarity with the pertinent literature, and a nice penchant for pulling things together theoretically. the latter is probably the book`s greatest strenngth since she theorizes with an intuitive elan one rarely sees in popularized books. she can do so because she is not a reporter visiting someone else`s field, but an ensconced scientist with an original mind. I am going to use this book with my class at the University of Chicago. All in all this book is a clear winner.

The Gold Coin
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (April, 1991)
Authors: Alma Flor Ada, Neil Waldman, and Bernice Randall
Average review score:

A Beautiful Moral
The Gold Coin is the story of Juan, a thief of experience, and his journey to find an old woman who gives away gold coins. In his quest to find her to steal away her assumed riches, Juan is forced to experience the helpfulness of strangers, depend on their kindness and enjoy with them the feeling of an honest day's labor. By the end of his travels, he has been transformed by the goodness of the people he has met. When he finally comes face to face with the woman he had intended to rob, he is a different person. Instead of taking her gold, Juan offers to mend her roof. He learns that giving to others allows him to feel rich. The Gold Coin is a great story to read aloud. It is warm and inspiring.

The Gold Coin: a treasure to read.
Alma Flor Ada is an author who writes both in Spanish and English. Her work focuses on action over description. Her communication of the values and qualities of the culture in which she immerses her readers makes her books notable. The Gold Coin tells of a man who is twisted in body and spirit until he is transformed by honest hard work, and caring decent people. The reader is introduced to an inspirational character, Dona Josefa. Although the thief doesn't meet her until the end of the story, it is her model of goodness that shines throughout the story. The illustrations admirably reflect the changes the thief undergoes as his body becomes straighter and his face less pale and angry. There are many surprises seeded throughout the story and the ending is wonderfully satisfying. Although this is an original tale, the writing has the flavor of a folktale and the culture and landscape of Central America are authentically portrayed.

Italian Regional Cooking
Published in Hardcover by Crescent Books (March, 1994)
Author: Ada Boni
Average review score:

A Wonderful Cookbook
This is my favorite Italian Cookbook. I purchased it 15 years ago and still use it all the time. I was sorry to see it was out of print, as my copy is so worn. This is the real Italian cooking, arranged by the different regions of Italy. Don't expect typical Italian-American fare (spaghetti and meat balls with gallons of tomato sauce, pizza with tons of meat and cheese, etc.). The recipes in this book are spectacular. Some of my favorites include Osso bucco Milanese (braised veal shanks) with saffron risotto, spaghetti with red clam sauce Viareggio, Manzo brasato (a beef roast, slowly braised in red wine with vegetables, served with polenta), and the Abruzzi pasta sauce made with lamb, red sweet peppers and tomatoes (d'Agnello). The recipes are easy to follow. Though the author often asks for fresh tomatoes, we've found that good canned plum tomatoes or crushed tomatoes in puree work fine for these recipes. Although occasionally, an ingredient is not readily obtainable in the U.S., you can usually find suitable substitutes. If you love authentic Old World Italian cooking, this book is well worth having.

The best authentic Italian recipe book I have found
This book is so well set out and illustrated; it has the best recipies.

I studied Italian in Florence in 1964, and we had wonderful food in the family I lived with.

After I was married, in 1975, I found "Italian Regional Cooking" in a book sale in Syracuse, New York. We were on a strict budget, but we bought it, and "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare", at the same time.

Both are still in use, with equal satisfaction, 26 years later.

My husband has since died, but I still love this recipe book, as it afforded us so many memorable, and not expensive, feasts, and the recipies are easy to follow.

Buy it!

LOT/EK: Urban Scan
Published in Paperback by Princeton Architectural Press (February, 2002)
Authors: Ada Tolla, Giuseppe Lignano, and Philip Nobel
Average review score:

Seclusive Architecture
Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano came to our school, Carnegie Mellon, in March 2003, to give a presentation of their retrospective work. I must admit that we, as the whole audience were enchanted by what they presented to us. LOT/EK, a NYC based architectural firm, has set its focus on mostly mobile units of architecture that involves structures and modules to be used in mostfully art and entertainment contexts.

They've done a lot of small structures that bring technology and entertainment together. Their projects for MoMa, Whitney Museum, and the Guggenheim are a couple of examples. Although they're very unique designs in addition to comprehensive enhancements in media use, they have a seclusive atmosphere. That was one of the issues that was brought up by the students and faculty. The modules, however comfortable and ergonomic they can be, tend to separate individuals from the outside environment almost completely. They did not provide a good answer to the question. Yet, there's no reason for harsh criticism for that; since they devote themselves to one particular theme in architecture. Perhaps we, as either students or professionals, always have the image of Le Corbusier or Aalto in our minds, that we think that an architect should do everything. It becomes nice when a man can get a hand on many things, but it should not be disrespected when a hand does one job only. In fact, specialization becomes a must with globalism.

I really liked their project for University of Washington, where they placed literally a 'slice' of an aeroplane onto a grass area in the campus. They've designed mobile seats, that can rotate vertically and horizontally, to allow for lectures, lounge relaxing and exhibitions, as the seats move.

'Isolating functions, not people...' Yes, this is what they had said, I now remember. I agree, their intention is not to isolate people. They instead intend to isolate functions, so that they are better realized without interruption. One might disagree with that, if interruption is a personal pleasure.

LOT/EK is definitely one of the most specialized, unique, creative and technological architectural firms today. Purchase the book to see their amazing work.

Machines for Living. Finally!
I first learned about architects Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lagnano (of LOT-EK) from an article in the House and Home section of the New York Times. I was intrigued by their use of low-cost, yet structurally sound, architectural elements (used shipping containers, tanker truck tanks, etc.) to create flexible spaces that are visually striking, yet responsive to human needs. A rare combination in architecture. Reading and looking through this book, my sense of interest morphed into outright enthusiasm. Not only does their work make sense environmentally--making sane reuse of items that are often discarded--their designs are extraordinarily well thought-out, architecturally innovative, socially aware and beautiful.

A superb book, terrific for those of you who are around young children

A must have book for anyone who is near 3 to 5 yr olds
This book is a must for anyone who works with or is near preschool children, I cannot recommend it strongly enough. It has excellent bulletin boards in it, and also terrific arts and crafts ideas for the different holidays and occasions. It covers all celebrations from Jewish Hannukah, to Ireland's St Patrick's Day. There are also some nice ideas for when you might have a substitute teacher in, and making all in the classroom feel at ease. It really is a brilliant book!

The Malachite Palace
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (May, 1998)
Authors: Alma Flor Ada, Leonid Gore, Rosalma Zubizarreta-Ada, and Rosa Zubizarreta
Average review score:

Freedom to Fly
This is a wonderful picture book, both the writing and the illustrations. It's about the cruelty and foolishness of snobbery. A very sweet little princess is kept inside the palace gates because the queen, the governess and the lady-in-waiting think she is too good to be mixing in with the riff-raff rabble kids outside the gates. She's not happy. One day the queen and her cronies trap a bird that has flown in to the palace but it isn't happy and starts to deteriorate, so the little princess helps it escape. In the process the princess makes a very important change in the way she is treated. The illustrations of this little princess are just perfect and they capture her emotions in such detail. The illustrations glow with a soft light and the deep green walls of the malachite palace add magic to the pictures and also a sort of innocence. This is a book that shows the strength that a child can have when they decide to live up to their true nature and think for themselves. It should help kids see that they can come up with ideas on their own for doing the right thing and that sometimes grown-ups can make mistakes. I love this book.

Gorgeous
"The Malachite Palace" is a beautiful book about friendship and respect. The little princess is not allowed to play with the common children outside because they are "rude" and "ignorant", according to her lady-in-waiting, governess, and the queen. One day she finds a little yellow bird, and decides to keep it for a friend. But being in the cage makes the little bird weak and sad, and the princess must find a way to set the bird free, and in doing so, show the women that watch over her that she cannot grow or be happy unless she is allowed to have friends.

The illustrations in this book are exquisite, almost ethereal. It is a treasure for any children's library, and sure to be a favorite.

A book that keeps you smiling all the way through.
A book to bring you happiness and hope about the prospect of world peace. It is filled with adventure and surprises as two children travel, experience and learn how to end war and bring peace. Once started, it is impossible to put down. It is a quick read, but keeps your thoughts entertained after completion. It is a book for readers of all ages who hope for peace, for a "world without war."

A Magical Peace Flower for All The Family
Peace Flower is a beautiful and inspiring story for the entire family, which can be read from the age of ten to a hundred and ten. It will delight young and old both for its exciting story, and its deep levels of metaphorical truths relevant to our times.

The book presents an imaginative tale of fantastic adventures in space, to find the magical "Peace Flower" and bring it back to earth as it does not yet exist in our present. Lee and Ronni, two brave children, face the terrible nuclear giant Nuki, who tries to stop them from bringing the magical peace flower to our earth. If they do, they will have the opportunity to put Nuki, back into his box, and end war forever. They travel the universe, past, present and future in a fantastic ultra Hi Tech comic vehicle called Muzi, guided by Petra, the smart and resourceful sister of Peter Pan.

When Lee and Roni, at the suggestion of wise scientist Bayles, go on their dangerous and urgent mission to find the Peace Flower, which can only be found in Esperia, the Land of the Future, they symbolize our hope that the next generation will be able to create a better and safer environment on earth, and a world beyond war.

Lee and Roni have to bring the Peace Flower to the Present on earth, to save the world from the danger of a global nuclear war, symbolized by the dreadful clutches of Nuki - the Giant Nuclear Dragon, who vows to totally destroy the world. During their extraordinary adventures in space, they meet fantastic creatures, and some major characters from literature and art, who help them to finally triumph and realize their goal of bringing the longed for trophy of peace on earth.

This book is a story of hope from one of the world's best known peacemakers, Ada Aharoni. It is an exciting and revealing tale that illuminates some of the major issues in our own lives such as war and peace. It teaches the values and lessons of caring, understanding, and making a difference in the world. It is one of the most important books for young adults as well as for all ages written in our times. It is a book for the here and now, as well as for posterity.

This book has been adopted by schools and colleges all over the world, in classes and programs, as well as in various educational forums of peace studies. It is also a spoken book, available on tape by Ladybug Publications, Ca.

Various institutions and journals have lauded this book, among them the Ministry of Education: "Peace Flower" is a still more wonderful and revolutionary contribution to children's literature than Harry Popper. It teaches caring, love and involvement. It should be taught all over our global village, and read by all.

New Waves comments: This book is a magical and an innovative masterpiece for young and old. The delightful and fantastic ultra- hi- tech space car Muzi, talks and winks, and it whizzes us together with the heroine Lee and her friend Roni - symbolic of the new generation - into a world beyond war. It is a must for all the family, and highly recommended. It is full of humor and will be loved by all.

Published in Paperback by Hbj School (January, 1995)
Authors: Hb Staff, Hb, and Alma Flor Ada
Average review score:

A Wonderful Tale
As a teacher I love folk tales. This one if one of my favorites. The story is about a rooster who is on his way to his uncle's wedding. He is dresses in his finest until he gets his beak dirty. Children will love the event series as one event leads into another. The pictures are very beautiful and colorful. This is a story that children of all ages will want to read again and again

A great sequencing activity story
A great humorus book. All children would understand the logic behind the events that occur. To hear all of the characters say "No I won't. Why should I", Gave the book a good sense of childish humor. Makes a great sequencing activity for students.
